The Gospel: Day 12

Posted by Jess

The Bible depicts human beings, all human beings everywhere, as in revolt against God, and therefore under his judgment. But although God stands over against us in judgment because of our sin, quite amazingly he stands over against us in love, because he is that kind of God—and the gospel is the good news of what God, in love, has done in Jesus Christ, especially in Jesus’s cross and resurrection, to deal with our sin and to reconcile us to himself.
Christ bore our sin on the cross. He bore the penalty, turned aside God’s judgment, God’s wrath, from us, and cancelled sin. The brokenness of our lives he restores; the shattered relationships he rebuilds in the context of the church; the new life that we human beings find in Christ is granted out of the sheer grace of God. It is received by faith as we repent of our sins and turn to Jesus. We confess him as Lord, and bow to him joyfully.
One day he will make all things new. The good news culminates in a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness, where neither sin nor any of its effects can survive, and where we enjoy the presence of God forever in the context of resurrection existence.

Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Righteous One, died for your sins. He was raised on the third day, triumphant over all his enemies. He reigns until he puts all of his enemies under his feet. Forgiveness of sins and a right standing with God come freely through him alone, by faith alone.

Each of us stands guilty before the Judge of all...we have been declared righteous on the basis of Christ’s premeditated and substitutionary sacrifice. Jesus Christ voluntarily and purposefully laid down his life so God could remain just while justifying the guilty— you and me. God has declared us righteous. All that remains is the issue of whether or not we will receive this pronouncement.

The God who created you accepts you. His Son voluntarily faced the unimaginable horror of the Cross, forsaken by God the Father and by man, in order to justify you. He was forsaken so we might be forgiven. He experienced separation so we might forever be secure in God’s love. He endured the wrath of God so that we would never have to. “He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification” (Romans 4:25). You have been justified!

The Gospel: Day 6

Man of sorrows Lamb of God
By His own betrayed
The sin of man and wrath of God
Has been on Jesus laid
Silent as He stood accused
Beaten mocked and scorned
Bowing to the Father's will
He took a crown of thorns

Oh that rugged cross
(My salvation
Where Your love poured out over me)
Now my soul cries out
Hallelujah
Praise and honor unto Thee

Sent of heaven God's own Son
To purchase and redeem
And reconcile the very ones
Who nailed Him to that tree
.
.
Now my debt is paid
It is paid in full
By the precious blood
That my Jesus spilled

Now the curse of sin
Has no hold on me
Whom the Son sets free
Oh is free indeed
.
.
See the stone is rolled away
Behold the empty tomb
Hallelujah God be praised
He's risen from the grave
~Man of Sorrows by Hillsong lyrics

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.”

My heart is glad and my soul rejoice
my flesh it dwells secure

because You put on flesh
lived a blameless life
my curse on the cross You bore
then You ripped the doors off the City of Death
and the chains fell to the floor
Now the serpent's crushed
It has been finished
and You reign forever more
~Psalm 16 Shane and Shane lyrics

“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.”

Imagine you are standing in front of a judge and he has just given you the verdict, guilty. You are sentenced to the electric chair. You’re walking to the chair but someone stands up and says “I will take her place.” He goes, sits in the chair and is killed on your behalf. You tell the judge, no it should have been me, but the man already took your place, your case is acquitted. The judge tells you, “get out of here, your case is closed.”

“What he’s saying is I’ll prepare a place for you by going to the cross tomorrow, and where I’m going you’re not going, nor do you really want to. I’m going to give my life sacrificially as a ransom for you and for my church. I’m going to allow your sin to become me, and the eyes of my Father will turn off of me for the first time in all eternity, so that I can make a way for you to come to God.”

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. There is a king and it is found that someone has stolen some of his prized possessions. So they searched the kingdom and they found that the thief was his own mother. Now the price to pay for stealing is thirty lashes. So what does the king do? Does he sentence his mother? He is a just king. He does. He sentences his mother to thirty lashes. They tie her to the post, but as they ready the whip the king yells “STOP!” He comes down from his throne, takes off his robe and wraps his arms around his mother covering her back with his body. “Okay, continue,” the king says and he receives the thirty lashes for his mom. This is what Christ did for us.
~ (paraphrased) Pastor Jim The Bridge Course

"Surely he took up our pain
   and bore our suffering,
yet we considered him punished by God,
    stricken by him, and afflicted.
5 But he was pierced for our transgressions,
    he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on him,
and by his wounds we are healed."

The Gospel: Day 1

For the next thirty days I’m going to write the gospel in the different ways that I’ve heard it in hopes to grasp it better. This is the Gospel as I understand it:

Jesus lived the life I couldn’t live (in perfect righteousness before God), died the death I deserve to die (he paid the penalty owed for my sin against God), and he rose from the dead making me right with God (justified in his sight).

“And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.” Colossians 2:13-14 ESV

God is faithful

Posted by Jess
When I was sick I was obsessed with the question, "Am I trusting the Lord? Am I really believing?" I would work myself into boughs of anxiety and fear, wondering if I was trusting the Lord enough to be saved. But are we saved by the measure of our faith or are we saved because we have faith, even the size of a mustard seed? What does God say? God says that even when we are faithless He remains faithful. His word says it time and time again. God is faithful. So maybe it's not how much I am holding on, but how tight He is holding on to me.

God will help

Posted by Jess

God encouraged me today. I was thinking about my life, we had just watched a video that asked what are you doing with your life? I don't want to waste my life, I thought, I want to do all that God has called me to do. This is a fear that I have often, that I'm not doing or going to be able to do what God wants me to do. The way I have been with anxiety and fear, it doesn't feel like I can do anything for God. Several months ago a preacher had a prophetic word for me that I would teach, but I've been having a hard time believing it. But today Moses came to mind (I think it was the Holy Spirit). Moses didn't think that he could do what God was calling him to do. And you know what God said?
"I will be with you." He also said he made our mouth, he made us. He is the Lord. He would help him.

Here is what happened:
10 Moses said to the Lord, “Pardon your servant, Lord. I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue.”
11 The Lord said to him, “Who gave human beings their mouths? Who makes them deaf or mute? Who gives them sight or makes them blind? Is it not I, the Lord?12 Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.”

How encouraging! God made our mouths, He made us, He is in control and He can and will help us to do all He has called us to do. And more than that, He is God, so He is more than capable to do it!

Trusting God

Posted by Jess

As a flight attendant we have trips scheduled that we have to fly. If we don’t want to fly we can ask others to fly in our place, or we can call in sick. But when you call in sick you cant use your travel benefits. Last year, I had a trip scheduled for the time I was going to be in Wales, but I took a leap of faith. I believed God wanted me to go to the Hilsong conference. So I flew with my friend to England. I remember Matt said I was being irresponsible. I was so nervous. Will someone pick my trip up? Will God come through? We had been in England a day and my trip was still on my schedule. We were leaving for Wales the next morning, it was several hours outside of England, so I had to decide. If the trip was still there in the morning I would have to go home, I thought. Could I chance it? I checked my schedule. It was still there. Your like the hired hand from John 10 that leaves the sheep, you’re leaving Stacy, I thought. I don’t want to be like the hired hand. I don’t want to leave Stacy.
I started to message people with reserve days to swap. My phone would buzz with the  reply, “No.”

I wanted to trust the Lord that He would move the trip. “I want to trust you Lord,” but I am so nervous, I thought. What if no one takes the trip, and I lose my job? I felt like God wanted me to be at this conference. I was in the shower, drowning in my thoughts, and the k.o. thought came, if I get fired I wont have insurance. I need insurance. I started to freak out. I’m sorry Lord, I cant trust you with this, I thought. I left the bathroom, rehearsing that I would say to Stacy that I have to go home. I looked at my phone one last time. Someone said yes! I could go! And we had a AMAZING time!

A few weeks later I found out that my friend was going to pick up my trip. She said her plans had cancelled and she was going to pick up my trip, but when she went to pick it up it was already gone. I learned that God had me covered both ways. I could have trusted Him. I can trust Him now. And so can you!

Leave the Results to God

Posted by Jess

Last night at our small group my friend shared this poem by Elizabeth Elliot:

From an old English parsonage down by the sea
There came in the twilight a message to me;
Its quaint Saxon legend, deeply engraven,
Hath, it seems to me, teaching from Heaven.
And on through the doors the quiet words ring
Like a low inspiration: “DO THE NEXT THING.”
Many a questioning, many a fear,
Many a doubt, hath its quieting here.
Moment by moment, let down from Heaven,
Time, opportunity, and guidance are given.
Fear not tomorrows, child of the King,
Trust them with Jesus, do the next thing
Do it immediately, do it with prayer;
Do it reliantly, casting all care;
Do it with reverence, tracing His hand
Who placed it before thee with earnest command.
Stayed on Omnipotence, safe ‘neath His wing,
Leave all results, do the next thing.
Looking for Jesus, ever serener,
Working or suffering, be thy demeanor;
In His dear presence, the rest of His calm,
The light of His countenance be thy psalm,
Strong in His faithfulness, praise and sing.
Then, as He beckons thee, do the next thing.

“Stayed on Omnipotence, safe ‘neath His wing, Leave all results, do the next thing”

This really stuck out to me. I just have to trust God with the outcome. I don’t have control over the outcome, I can only do my best and leave the outcome to God. This was surprisingly freeing. It gave me peace. I’ve spent so much time trying to account for and control the outcomes that it debilitated me from doing anything and caused so much anxiety. I was trying to control something too big for my hands. This reminded me not only that God is in control, but that I am safe under his wings.

God answered!

Posted by Jess

God answered my prayer today! I read Romans 9:

15 For he says to Moses, “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.” 16 So then it depends not on human will or exertion, but on God, who has mercy.

This scared me. "What if He decides to stop showing me mercy?" I thought. I was immediately reminded of Romans 8, that nothing can separate me from His love, but the fear still lingered. "Lord Jesus, Father in Heaven," I prayed, "I confess this makes me afraid. I know that you wont stop showing me mercy because Romans 8 says nothing can separate us from your love. Please help me overcome this fear with your love. Your word says true love casts out all fear. Please cast away my fears Father."
I then went about my day.

Later that evening He answered! Here's how: "His steadfast love endures forever."

"Unlike human love, which is often fickle and temporary, God's love never fails, no matter what....God has put his love on us and he will never again remove it" -Paul David Tripp
There was my answer! God's steadfast love endures, all things. For how long? Forever! So God will love me forever, and show me His love forever.

In all of this I realize I was questioning God's character. Is He a God who is fickle? No. Would he decide to show me mercy today and then one day just decide not to? No. His steadfast love endures forever!

Rereading the verses now, I see the Gospel in them. What a reminder that it is not what we do, but what God does. I feel the relief that we don't have to work for God's mercy. And that is good news!

P.S. Here is the full devotional entry if you're interested! ('New Morning Mercies' by Paul David Tripp)

1000K Words Challenge

Posted by Jess
For some reason, I suffered from a huge writing funk last week. I wouldn't have called it writer's block. It was more like I was trapped in an entanglement of chicken wire, and my brain lost all ability to function. Not just on my story, but on any kind of writing in general. Even my text messages felt like a battle. (Jet Lag may have been the culprit, however results are inconclusive.)

No matter how many ideas came into my head, I just couldn't transfer them into written words. And then Mark Galarrita saved the day! (I told him I was going to write a post about this. He thought I was joking. =D )

Mark and I met at a writer's coffee shop on Saturday, and he challenged me to a duel. Whoever writes the most words in an hour wins. The goal is to breach a thousand. The loser must buy the victor a book.

Despite my writing ailment, I accepted this challenge because let's face it, I never say no to a free book ( ;-D ). So I set up my laptop across the table from his, and he started the timer. Go!

For fifteen minutes straight I typed absolutely nothing. Well, that's not true. I had, "What are you doing?" written at the top of the page. I'm pretty sure it was a message to myself.

"38 minutes," Mark said. Ahh!
We compared word counts. He already had over 700 words! My fingertips grazed over the keyboard, itching to press one of the black buttons. Any of the black buttons. Just write something Jess! I told myself.

And then several minutes later, something beautiful happened. I started typing. It was a mess, but it was just the mess I needed to break out of my funk.

"15 minutes," Mark said. My fingers rushed over the keys, but I was still no where close to his 700. Not to mention I was taking breaks to talk to him. Sitting across the table from an interesting person is like Kryptonite when I'm trying to get work done.

Tap! Tap! Tap! My fingers raced over the keys, while my brain tried to hold down the conversation at the same time. The tiny numbers at the bottom of my page ticked higher and higher with every stroke. I can do this! I got this! The book is miiineeeee!

Aaaaaaaand, I lost. I ended up with just under 500 words. But inside I was jumping for joy. I can write again! My heart shouted. "Yea, I know. I'm the one who did it stupid," my brain shouted back. It was great!

We ended up at a thrift store that was selling 2 books for $1 on the sidewalk. Yes, 2 for $1! I couldn't believe it. There was a nice elderly man sitting across from the book table. He was the money collector, and he was very wise.

"I'll give you 2 more books for free if you can answer this riddle," the wise man said to me. "There are 12 birds sitting on a line. If I shoot one, how many are left?"

Do you know the answer? Post your guess in the comments below.

After a few moments of pondering and visualizing the scenario, I found the right answer. And we got two free books! Mark gave the man a dollar anyway. The thrift store donates its proceeds to the AIDS movement. If you're ever in Philly, you should definitely check it out: Philly AIDS Thrift. Also if you want to read some original short stories and fiction, I suggest you check out Mark's page! You wont be disappointed.

So the moral of this story is, next time your brain is trapped in writer's chicken wire, call a friend and challenge them to duel! If anything, at least you'll get a free book.

BTW, even though I lost, Mark bought two of my books for me, and I surprised him with one he'd been looking at. It was a good day to be a writer!

p.s. We found Pope Francrex! <3

6 Exercises to Find Your Character's Voice

Posted by Jess

Each scenario is built to reveal different aspects of a personality. Some of these may not be relevant to the world of your story, so by all means tweak them to fit into the world you’ve created. Grab a notebook, a pencil, and get ready to jump into the heads of your characters!

Scenario #1: Dealing with a bully.
Have your character react to being bullied, or perhaps he or she is the one doing the bullying, maybe they’re witnessing someone else being bullied, or it’s possible that they don’t even notice the incident or care. Would this character interfere? Turn a blind eye? Egg it on? Would they stand up for themselves? Fight back? Laugh and walk away?

This reveals how the character deals with confrontation and conflict. It uncovers their values, their confidence level, whether they’re a leader, a follower, or blind to the plight of others. It also shows how others view this character. However, more importantly, it reveals how strong the character is mentally. A character's mental state dictates what they say out loud.

Scenario #2: Getting Pulled over by the police for speeding.
How your character(s) react(s) when they see the flashing lights… as they park on the side of the road while glancing in the rearview mirror… how they speak to the officer. Do they fix their hair in the mirror first, tap their fingers on the steering wheel, wipe their hands on their jeans, curse, check out the officer as he’s approaching the car?

All of this reveals how the character views, and reacts, to authoritative figures. Every story has some form of authority whether it is a boss, a parent, a tyrannical government. Tweak this by using the authoritative force in your story. For instance, if this were the Hunger Games you could use President Snow. This is a good way to find out what your character thinks vs. what he or she actually does. It also reveals how much power they think they have vs. how much they actually have.

Scenario #3: A stranger tells them they're cute.
A confident character may respond with ease, flirt back, seal the deal, or perhaps not respond at all if they're overly confident. A self-conscious character might try to justify the compliment or question it: "She didn’t really mean that" OR "He’s only talking to me because no one else asked me to dance" OR "It’s only because Macy put makeup on me." Maybe the character will start babbling, telling awkward jokes, or reveal some other quirk that’s lurking inside them. Your job is to find that quirk!

This exercise reveals a character’s confidence level, but mostly it reveals how the character views and feels about him or herself. And that is where the juicy stuff is!

Scenario #4: Have one character write a letter to another.
Have your character write a letter to their best friend in the story explaining what’s happening to him or her [in this point of the story]. OR you can have the character write a letter to the antagonist, or a love interest, or a parent.

This especially helps me when I have writer’s block because it allows the character to speak freely. It reveals how the character feels about their current situation, as well as their level of comfort with the character to which they are writing. Notice how their diction changes depending on whom they're addressing.

Scenario #5: Shopping in a department store, grocery store, or whatever kind of store your story’s world would have.
Your character can be shopping alone, or with a group of friends. What do they buy, where do they go, what type of items do they window shop for? Maybe they hate shopping and they’re pissed that they’re at the mall. Maybe they run into another character while they’re there. Just roll with it, and see what happens.

This reveals how your character acts in public, how they view the public, how they view the ideals of the society in which they live. Something that comes to mind is a scene from the movie Fight Club (my absolute favorite movie! I literally watch it at least twice a month!) In the scene, Brad Pitt and Ed Norton are standing on a bus. Norton looks at a Gucci ad and says, “Is that what a man looks like?” Pitt laughs. A few beats later a stranger bumps into Pitt and both characters size up the stranger. These are the types of situations you should put your characters in for this exercise. Have them glance at the ads in the store, the other people walking around, the actual products. Think of all of the times you’ve gone shopping. Now put your characters into those memories.

Scenario #6: Two characters have dinner together.
It could be in a restaurant, at a bar, a taco truck, or a home cooked meal. If these characters wouldn’t normally have dinner together and they are out of their element, express that! Show it! Let them be awkward with each other. See how they behave when they’re out of their comfort zone. Or perhaps the characters click and form a bond that you didn’t see coming. Like I said before, just roll with it and see what happens.
Start off with just two characters at a time, and then when you feel more comfortable with their personalities, add more guests.

This exercise isn’t about creating scenes for your story, it’s about revealing how your characters feel about each other, how they express those feelings, and more importantly, how they speak to each other. (That is what we're looking for!)

Your options are endless with this type of development because you can literally throw your characters into any type of situation. As your character weaves through each scenario you'll start to see patterns in their speech, their actions, and their thoughts. I like to highlight these patterns when I reread what I wrote. I also highlight random dialogue and actions that ring true as I'm writing. It may take your characters a bit to warm up, but you'll definitely leave each scenario learning something about them.

Keep in mind, the scenarios you use should be basic. They should be ordinary, every day situations because it's a lot easier to pinpoint characteristics when there's not an overload of emotions involved. Once you pinpoint your character’s quirks, thoughts, reasoning, and view of him/herself and their world, then it will be much easier to amp up those traits when say their best friend is killed in battle or they’re caught by the enemy or when they're interacting with their love interest. Uncover the basics then amp it up for your story. As I’ve said time and time again, just roll with it and see what happens!

If there's an exercise that you use to find your character's voice let me know in the comments below! I'm always looking for techniques to add to my tool belt. Hope this post helped!

Until next time,
☮❤=)
