God answered my prayer today! I read Romans 9:
15 For he says to Moses, “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.” 16 So then it depends not on human will or exertion, but on God, who has mercy.
This scared me. "What if He decides to stop showing me mercy?" I thought. I was immediately reminded of Romans 8, that nothing can separate me from His love, but the fear still lingered. "Lord Jesus, Father in Heaven," I prayed, "I confess this makes me afraid. I know that you wont stop showing me mercy because Romans 8 says nothing can separate us from your love. Please help me overcome this fear with your love. Your word says true love casts out all fear. Please cast away my fears Father."
I then went about my day.
Later that evening He answered! Here's how: "His steadfast love endures forever."
"Unlike human love, which is often fickle and temporary, God's love never fails, no matter what....God has put his love on us and he will never again remove it" -Paul David Tripp
There was my answer! God's steadfast love endures, all things. For how long? Forever! So God will love me forever, and show me His love forever.
In all of this I realize I was questioning God's character. Is He a God who is fickle? No. Would he decide to show me mercy today and then one day just decide not to? No. His steadfast love endures forever!
Rereading the verses now, I see the Gospel in them. What a reminder that it is not what we do, but what God does. I feel the relief that we don't have to work for God's mercy. And that is good news!
P.S. Here is the full devotional entry if you're interested! ('New Morning Mercies' by Paul David Tripp)
Until next time,
